With over 15 years of experience, Mariel is a seasoned litigator with a diverse case load that is primarily focused on federal practice. She is a native English and Spanish speaker, with exceptional verbal and writing abilities. Self-possessed and easily assertive when necessary, she has eloquently tried jury cases in the United States District Court for the District of Puerto Rico and successfully briefed and argued before the United States Court of Appeals for the First Circuit and the Puerto Rico Supreme Court. Mariel boasts an outstanding dispositive motion record and, when needed, her persuasive skills have proven effective in negotiating and closing settlements. She is well-regarded among her colleagues and has a sterling reputation with the judges in both federal and Puerto Rico courts. Mariel is also a published author and a frequent speaker on Labor & Employment matters.

Always a creative and independent thinker, Mariel was self-taught after 7th grade and completed high school in two (2) years, graduating just shy of her 16th birthday. Mariel is an avid reader and world traveler.  When not at the office, she's happiest getting lost in a new city, or a great book.
Mariel's areas of practice include exclusive representation of management before administrative agencies and in federal and Puerto Rico courts in wrongful discharge cases, discrimination suits, retaliation and whistleblower claims, wage and hour and benefits claims, as well as employment-related torts, such as defamation and privacy violation claims. A significant part of Mariel's practice consists in counselling her clients on how to avoid or minimize litigation risks. She also assists her clients with compliance issues regarding federal and Puerto Rico labour laws, employment discrimination statutes (such as the Americans with Disabilities Act, Age Discrimination in Employment Act, Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, etc.), ERISA, and other laws governing various aspects of employment. Her practice also encompass appellate practice in both federal and Puerto Rico courts. Her additional areas of practice include representation of major airlines serving Puerto Rico in the areas of (i) passenger litigation, (ii) labor and employment matters, and (iii) premises liability litigation; and representation of insurers in the areas of Employment Practices Liability, Directors & Officers, and Professional Liability claims. Mariel also has extensive experience in the area of Employment-Based Immigration, including H-1B visas for professional and individuals with specialized knowledge; L visas for intra-company transfers for executives, administrators, professionals, and individuals with specialized knowledge; E visas for treaty investors and treaty traders; and Labor Certifications, employment-based permanent resident petitions and naturalization.
